Main Task: Double Page Spread FINAL

Main Task: Contents Page FINAL

This is my first draft for my contents page. I picked a grey background and black text. Behind the word contents i put a white box behid it to make it stand out more. I also added an image.

I need to add more text and more images to make it look visually interesting.

This is my second draft for my contents page. My contents page is starting to look more like a contents page. I mover the picture more into the corner and then continued to write all the features that are in the magazine. I decided to put a white box behind the text to make it stand out and to make it easier to read. I also added a black line around the boxes to divide them. I put the magazine website in the top right hand corner.

Above the strip that says contents I have added some pictures. The space under the word contents is where I am going to put my editors note.

This is my final contents page which I hve re-designed to suite ant attract the target audience more.

Main Task: Unmanipulated Photos

I have taken some pictures for my magazine.

I have chosen this image for my front cover. I really like the girls straight facial expressions.

Im going to use this image for my contents page but the only disadvantage is that the girl on the left hand side, her hand is covering her mouth.

I have chosen this image for my my double page spread.

I am not going to use this image because it is blury and out of focus.

This is another image that im not going to use this image because it is slightly blury and out of focus. Also because the girls are too far apart and are not posing.

In conclusion I am very happy with the photos but the only disadvantage is that the setting is quite busy and it would of been better if the pictures were taken somewhere else with a plain background.

Main Task: Front Cover FINAL

This is the first draft for the front cover of my music magazine. I chose a purple background because it is a nice bright colour.

I decided to call my magazine hip hip because it is a hip hop magazine.I have two girls posing on the front cover. I have some of my cover lines, I have the barcode and the price of the magazine.

I need to add some more coverlines, the main coverline, the date, the issue of the magazine and the magazine website.

This is my second draft for the front cover of my music magazine.

As you can see their has been a dramatic change between the first draft and and the second draft. In the first draft the background was purple and the two girls were wearing bright clothing, the colours didnt really blend. Also the masthead 'hip hip' the colour scheme was black and pink and the pink didnt tie in with the other colours.

I did not take my pictures on a plain background that is why their is a brick wall and grass in the background. I think this draft looks much better than the first one. I chose to keep this image the way it is because when you cut an image out it does not look as smooth as it would if it was an original. When you cut an image out you can tell that it has been cut out. The masthead is much simpler, the image is strong. As you can see in this draft their is only one of the girls instead of two. I have the main coverline bigger than all the other coverlines. I have a barcode, price of my magazine, the date, the issue number, the magazine website.

Main Task: Case Study of a Publishing House

Conde Nast publishers is a one of the worlds big leading publishers of upcoming glossy magazines. company in New York, America. The company have also produced 18 major magazines, 4 business publications and over 50 applications for smart phones. They publish a range of different magazines such as: Glamour.com, GQ.com, Easy Living magazine.com, Conde nast traveller centraveller.com, Brides magazine.co.uk, Vouge.com, Wired.co.uk. They range from fashion, food technology and also travel.
The target audience depends on the type of magazine. Vogue magazine, The New Yorker and Vanity Fair magazine are all about fashion and are fashion based so that would target mainly teenage girls and women as they would like to keep up with the latest fashion trends. Where as Easy Living has, different categories within the magazine such as: food, emotions, news, health, fashion, beauty and homes.
It targets different audiences with each magazine that it makes because they are aimed at certain age groups. Some magazines might not be relevant to certain audiences.
If Conde Nast were to publish my magazine, that would be good because they do not publish any hip-hop music magazines like mine. That would also mean, new customers and the company would be making more money.

Main Task: Audience Research

These are the questions that I asked people to find out their views on hip-hop music and what they would like to see in a hip-hop magazine. I then took screen grabs of some of the responses that I got. All the responses that I got would help me to create my hip-hop music magazine.

These are the questions that I asked:

1. What word(s) come to mind when you think of hip-hop music?

2. On the front cover of a music magazine, what catches your eye? The title, text, image or other?

3. Do you think specific genres of music magazines should target pnly a specific audience and why? If yes, what age group?

Main Task: Double Page Spread Conventions Diagram

This is my double page spread conventions diagram.

Main Task: Double Page Spread Textual Analysis

Denotation
The left page has a large image of a lady posing which is taking up all of the page, but is broken up with a quote from the interview. On the left their is mostly writing but the page is broken up with two pictures and big bold eye catching font.

Colour scheme
This magazine's double page spreed has a simple colour scheme of two colours which are black and white. On a magazine double page spread a simple colour scheme is used which means the colours are kept to a minimum, which creates a modern and contemporary look.

Image
The image, is one large image taking up the whole of the left page and the text is on the right page. The pose of the lady is of direct adress.

Subject Name
The subject name is somewhere amongst the double page spread layout, the subject name will be placed or highlighted. The subject in this article is Eva Mendes. She is an actress who was born in Miami, Florida.

Quotes
Most double page spreads include a quote taken from the interview. They would be enlarged and placed somewhere in the article. They would break up the page, they would be posioned by the picture, under the headline, in the stand-first or placed in the middle of the columns of text. "Eva, Whats your secret obsession? We all have secret obsessions". In this case the quote is placed on the picture of Eva.

Stand-first
A stand-first is an introductory paragraph printed in large/bold/capital font and is always used at the start of a writen article.

Drop Capital
All double page spreads have a drop capital at the start of the article. This shows the reader where to start reading. In this case it is the G.

Headline
The headline is often placed across the top of either one page or both, the headline will use a stylized font. It doesnt always tell the reader about the article, sometimes it could be a song title, quote or pun. Headlines are used to draw the reader in.

By-line
A little section where the journalist's name is written and the photographer is credited.

Columns
A double page spread is laid out in columns, usually 2 to 4 columns. In this article that I am studying it has 2 columns.

Strap-line
Often placed at the top or bottom of a page, it also tells you the subject matter.

Main Task: Front Cover Conventions Diagram

Main Task: Front Cover Textual Analysis

Denotation
This Magazine cover has a colour photograph of a women looking directly into the camera but with her body facing away from it. It has a mid shot showing her head, arms and just above her waist. From what I can see she look like she is standing up. This image is used in a classic way, she really stands out on the page and is making direct eye contact (direct address). The background of the photograph is white, the photograph covers most of the magazine cover. Surrounding the picture are a number of cover-lines in two different shades of red, which are of various sizes and in sans serif font. Behind Amy in the top left hand corner is the masthead 'SPIN'. The photographed women's name is in big bold dark red letters 'AMY WINEHOUSE'. A bar code is placed on the bottom right of the front cover.

Masthead
SPIN masthead is in white letters with a red box behind it. The font used is a serif font. In the early days of the magazine, it was noted for its broad music coverage. The magazine was electric and bold. Spin magazine always used newer artists such as Prince, Run DMC, the Beastie Boys and many more on its covers, as well as lengthy features on Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Miles Davis and John Lee Hooker-Bart Bull's article on John won the magazine its first ever major award.

The Magazine started to put black artists on the cover but it was considered as a risk and damaging newsstand slaes. This Masthead is short and simple. It is a very universal magazine comapred to magazines such as NME and Q.

Character
The cover photograph is of a very successful English singer-songwriter 'Amy Winehouse'. She is known for her very strong and powerful soul voice and electrical mix of soul, jazz and R'n'B. Her 2003 debut album, Frank was very successful in the UK and was nominated for a mercury prize. In 2006 she had a follow up album, Back to Black, which led to six Grammy award nominations and she won five of them. She was the only female artist to win the most awards in one night and made Amy the first British female to win five grammys including three of the 'big four': best new artist, record of the year and song of the year.

On February 14 2007 Amy won a BRIT award for best for the best British female artist. She was also nominated for best British album. She also won the Ivor Novello award, three times one in 2004 for best contemporary song, one in 2007 for best contemporary song and one in 2008 for best song musically and lyrically. The album is the biggest seller of the 2000s in the United Kingdom. Amy Winehouse is credited as an influence in the rise in popularity of female musicians and soul music and also for revitalising British music.

Mise en scene

Lighting

The lighting is high-key lighting and it is coming from the left and shining on one side of her leaving the other side dark, which connotes that she might have a dark side to her or something to do with her personal life.

Costume
Amy's outfit is a leopard print dress showing a bit of cleavage. Her costume was specifically chosen to appeal to the target audience of the magazine, who are most likely to be both male and female age of 16 and up. I think men would look at it because of the tattoos but women would look at it because she was such a big inspiration to people. Her tattoos and big hair completes the look and also connotes that she likes to have a good time.

NVC
Her arms are by her side. Her mouth is open slightly which draws attention to her redish/pinkish lips and white teeth.

Setting
There is not much of a setting just a plain white background which makes Amy Winehouse stand out more.

Props

Anchorage
The font has no flick ups which connotes a more modern font.

Cover-lines
The main cover line is relater to the picture and says " Amy Winehouse: The dangerous new queen of soul". This is stating her powerful voice which is like no other. Their are many cover lines spread around the page. The different cover-lines tell us that the magazine doesn't just focus on one genre of music, like rap, rock and other genres, also doesn't just focus on music. The artists mentioned on the cover are Amy Winehouse, 50Cent and white stripes.
Also features from Patton Oswalt a stand up comedian, careers counseling from Scott Weiland.

Main cover-line
The main cover line is larger that all the other cover lines. It is taking up almost a quater of the magazine cover. It promotes the artist as current.

Target audience
Considering all of these points, I think the likely target audience would be both male and female, but mostly female from age 16 and up. The younger generation would have good knowledge of the more current artistsuch as Amy Winehouse and 50 Cent, where as the older generation would have better knowledge of older artists like White Strips, Run DMC and Prince.

Main Task: Introduction

Hello my name is Tia Johnson I am studying media at Christ The King Sixth Form College. I chose this course because I am very creative and I think I am going to enjoy it. I have been set a task to produce a front cover, contents page and a double page spread for a music magazine. I am going to have to do some research on music magazines. Also ask a number of people questions about my chosen genre which is going to be hip-hop, and what they would like to see in a music magazine, I will do this through bbm, msn ect. I have to look at different layouts for a front cover, contents page and double page spread so I get a feel for what music magazines look like. I also have to think of the typography, colour scheme and the images I am going to be using. I am also going to be taking pictures for my front cover, contents page and double page spread.
